Airlines
Bangkok Airways provides a direct, 1 hour flight from Bangkok to Siem Reap. The price is an expensive 11,500 baht round trip. A one-way flight from Sukothai to Siem Reap and a one-way from Siem Reap to Phuket have also been added. Bangkok Airways contact numbers: reservations (8-5 daily Bangkok time) (662)229-3456-63 (this means you can call all the numbers between 229-3456 and 229-3463), ticketing (8-5 M-F) (662)229-3434
Note on Direct Flights to Siem Reap
It may be worth your while to skip chaotic Phnom Penh and go directly to Siem Reap. The direct flight (on Bangkok Airways) from Bangkok to Siam Reap costs 11,500 baht. Compare this one-hour flight (on Thai Airways) from Bangkok to Korat which costs only 1200 baht!
Before the coup in 1997, Cambodia had made many agreements with international companies based on the premise that all international flights would have to land in Phnom Penh. After the coup, Siem Reap was allowed to make an agreement with Bangkok Airways to allow direct flights bypassing Phnom Penh. Despite loud protests from international concessionaires in Phnom Penh, the flights continued. In December, 1999, an "open skies" policy was declared over Cambodia which would allow any airline to fly directly to Siem Reap.

Things That Matter: Khmer Kids Link to the Future - excellent article about how orphans in remote villages are recruited to set up internet connections in their remote villages
Cambodia Schools - build a school with your name on it for $14,000 US. Michael Hawley, in an article here, describes the project: "Your $14,000 is matched by $12,000 from the World Bank. And $2,000 of it is kept for teachers' salaries (in order to import a new breed of teachers). So for $24,000 net, a three- to five-room elementary school is built in a rural village. But for an extra $1,700, the school gets a solar roof to power its computers (ah, there's the technology). Apple Japan and others have been donating machinery to these causes."

Finally, the APSARA Authority's website is back again, after many silent months. Its new address is: http://www.autoriteapsara.org. We could not get our previous name back, unfortunately. As you will see, it has changed a great deal, and should be further developed in the coming months (with more visual content).

Government
The Cambodian Constitution - We like the preamble more each time we read it: "Accustomed to having been an outstanding civilization, a prosperous, large, flourishing and glorious nation, with high prestige radiating like a diamond, Having declined grievously during the past two decades, having gone through suffering and destruction, and having been weakened terribly, Having awakened and resolutely rallied and determined to unite for the consolidation of national unity, the preservation and defense of Cambodia's territory and precious sovereignty and the fine Angkor civilization, and the restoration of Cambodia into an "Island of Peace" based on a multi-party liberal democratic regime
guaranteeing human rights, abiding by law, and having high responsibility for the nation's future destiny of moving toward perpetual progress, development, prosperity, and glory, WITH THIS RESOLUTE WILL WE inscribe the following as the Constitution of the Kingdom of Cambodia:"

History
National Archives of Cambodia  - in French and English - not much actual material is online - the site is many explaining their mission and progress in preservation of government documents - good info on how to register as a researcher to obtain access to the materials is here (Note: "Documents concerning the period 1975-1979, the time of Khmer Rouge rule in Cambodia, can only be consulted after having obtained the authorization of the Council of Ministers. A similar letter of introduction is needed for this purpose, adressed to the Council of Ministers.")

Hotels
Cambodiahotels.net - asiahotels.net runs this site with hotel listings in both Phnom Penh and Siem Reap

Auberge Mont-Royal D'Angkor - We haven't stayed here, but this seems like a clean hotel--only $25-30US a night!

Grand HotelGrand Hotel d'Angkor
Whoever runs this website likes to change all the links often. The hotel web address used to be: http://www.raffles.com/raffles.htm
Now it's been changed to the easy-to-remember: http://www.raffles.com/raffles/mini_site/mini_site_general_information.asp?mini_site_id=6&content_group_type_id=5
If the link has been changed when you try to access the site, just go to
http://www.raffles.com and try to find the hotel link on that page.
In 1992, the Grand Hotel d'Angkor was the only true hotel in Siem Reap, but it was an unair-conditioned, decaying wreck. Today it has been completely remodeled and now is the most expensive place to stay in town. If you've got $270US a night to spend, this is the place to stay.

Angkor.com has received many emails asking for the phone numbers of Grand Hotel d'Angkor. It seems whatever numbers have been published are wrong, so here is the correct contact information: Grand Hotel d'Angkor, Siem Reap, Kingdom of Cambodia, 1 Vithei Charles de Gaulle, Khum Sva
y Dang Kum, Siem Reap, Kingdom of Cambodia
We found two sets of phone numbers:

tel: 855-63-963-888 or 855-23-981-888

fax: 855-63-963-168 or 855-23-981-168
