At 7:59 a.m. there was a mysterious call from a terrorist to the director of [withheld] School...

Separatist: Hello, are you the director of [withheld] School?

Official: Yes.

Separatist: Your soldiers shot the villagers today. You told the soldiers to escort you to [withheld], but our guys will get you and once you are home instead.

Then he hung up.

At 10:50am a mysterious called to the director of [withheld]. The director was not there so he called back again later.

Separatist: Are you [withheld]?

Official: Yes. Who are you?

Separatist: You don' t have to know

Official: So you are Yawae?

Separatist: Yes, and you are Babi [people who are Thai Buddhists - "Babi" means "pig."] who shot Toh Imam Ban Bajor. Do you know?

[On the ground in the deep south this is a constant theme from the viewpoint of the lowest level young men who make up the separatists who are committing violent acts--that they are striking back against assassinations of local officials by Thai authorities.]

Official: I have heard about that, but the details are not clear.

Separatist: You bastard.

Official: If you say something like this [use an impolite word] you will have to speak to yourself.

Separatist: All right, daemor [sir].

Official: If you want me to know your story, you have to answer my question first.

Separatist: You listen to me first.

Official: You must answer my question first. If you want me to do the thing that the Islam religion asks...

The separatists tries to speak at the same time and the director hangs up on him.

At 10:59 the separatist called again.

Separatist: Why you hang up without a word?

Official: You didn't answer my question.

Separatist: What was the question?

Official: I will do only things that are not in opposition to the principles of Islam. If you order me to do things that oppose the religious principle, I will not do what you say.

Separatist: All right. I speak the thing that does not oppose religion and be right only.

Official: So.. go on...

Separatist: The Babi group shot Toh Imam, so I will shoot 10 teachers in [withheld]. If the director obstructs us, I will tackle you also.

[In the deep south many officials either cooperate or look the other way when they know of violent acts being committed--tacitly taking the side of the separatists. The caller here is warning the official not to obstruct the activities of the separatists.]

Official: So you just know only my title, but not where I work.

Separatist: Sorry, which school you are director?

Official: I am at [withheld - this means the separatist has called the wrong school to make the threat].

Separatist: Be careful. One day I will plant something [meaning a bomb].

The separatist hangs up.
